Packing jewelry begins before the case is opened. Think about the days ahead: the clothes you will wear, the activities you have planned, and the pieces you will genuinely enjoy having with you.

A small, considered selection makes both dressing and keeping track of your jewelry easier.

1. Choose for the Actual Trip

Lay out your likely outfits and select pieces that work with more than one of them. A familiar ring and a pair of earrings may cover the occasions you have planned.

Consider whether there will be practical times and places to remove jewelry. If a piece would spend most of the trip being worried about or put away, it may be happier staying home.

Before departure, look over settings and fastenings. Have anything loose or damaged assessed by a jeweler rather than hoping it will last through the journey.

2. Give Each Piece Its Own Space

Use a padded case or separate soft pouches so pieces do not rub against one another. Rings, earrings, and chains should be held apart rather than collected loose in one pocket.

Diamonds can damage other jewelry, including other diamonds, through contact. A thoughtful arrangement protects more than the outside of the case.

Keep necklaces organized separately, and check that the case closes without pressing on raised settings. Keep liquids and toiletries apart from the jewelry.

3. Create a Repeatable Routine

Carry valuable jewelry with you rather than placing it in checked baggage. Keep track of the selected pieces throughout the journey.

At your destination, return removed jewelry to an appropriate secure storage place instead of leaving it on unfamiliar ledges or bathroom surfaces. Follow the care guidance for each specific piece.

Before leaving, compare what you are packing with the selection you brought. A brief, familiar routine is easier to remember than a last-minute search.
